Julie Alpert Pomp & Pageantry #5, 2016 watercolor, colored pencil and marker on paper 12 x 12 inches
Pomp & Pageantry #5 is a small, 12 x 12 inch drawing made with colored pencil and marker, and painted with watercolors. The design is superflat, with colors and lines creating a visual feeling of varied texture and pattering. This piece comes unframed.
Alpert’s stylized works are like translations of the over-stimulating effects of media and social media. If “the medium is the message”, then Alpert mimics the effect of ornate aesthetics and quantity over content in media culture. Information courses through an endless feedback loop — repeating until only the symbols, patterns, and decoration remain.
