KAT LARSON \ carefull.
My teacher, Char Sundust, once told me, To lead another, you must first learn to lead yourself. To do so, I must develop a profound relationship with the inner workings of my intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual self. As I was ruminating over this in consideration of my show with Bridge Productions, I remembered Gaston Bachelard’s book, The Poetics of Space, and his opinions on the phenomenology of space within the mind. I applied this conceptual thought process to my previous work, The Ghost from Vega, to expand upon the idea of the Ghost and the personal representations of “self” it could potentially posit for the viewer.
The Ghost has been a symbol and spirit of love and compassion as tools for modern activism against thought regimes that limit our potential and our spirits. If what Char imparted is acceptable, and if we can agree that we are humans entrenched in politics desiring revolutionary change, then we must begin to change the personal self before we can collectively excite a massive difference within a larger population. We need to first revolutionize the perceived image and belief systems we have about ourselves before we can revolutionize our patriarchal institutions.
Images from this series represent spaces in or around a house, each location correlating to an element of Self. As you look at this body of work, perhaps you can consider how you tend to your own emotional, physical, intellectual, and spiritual self. Please consider how your ideas cause a motion of actions and how these actions define your reality.
Be care-full with yourself. Radical change is rooted from deep within.
